Land Law in Lesotho: The Politics of the 1979 Land Act (Making of Modern Africa)

This book concerns the land policy in Lesotho and the difference between policy and actual practice in lowland rural areas. Two paths of inquiry have been used. The first centres on land law, specifically the stated goals and intentions of the 1979 land act and the main provisions of the act, which are leasehold and inheritance. The intention behind both provisions is to encourage commoditization of land. The second path explores various kinds of transactions which actually take place on cropland.
